MAREA – From MARine Ecosystem Accounting to integrated governance for sustainable planning of marine and coastal areas

Tavoitteet

MAREA will pave the way for an integrated Economic-Ecological model (Eco2) that performs a multi-dimensional and systemic evaluation of the SDGs in support to governance for sustainability. This is based on the achievement of human non-negotiable basic needs and rights within the limits resources available (bounded capabilities). The Eco2, by mean of the Sustainability Compass, will attempt to combine different metrics that can help identifying actions and necessary performance levels in pursuit of Agenda 2030 and deepen understanding of the sustainable use of common/joint natural resources in the Baltic Sea area. This will facilitate the re-understanding and social learning about how human actions can be planned and performed according as embedded into natural cycles, which are the ultimate bottom line to be maintained for human life. At the same time, the Eco2 approach will improve understanding the most important human basic human needs to be accomplished for well-being from a less subjective perspective of individual preferences. This means building a culture based on scientific evidence and ethics, which are ‘intellectual and moral virtues’ towards wisdom.
